      Operations Manager Interview

      Dec 19, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Detroit, MI
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Detroit, MI) in Oct 2019

      Interview

First need to complete an online assessment. This covers personality questions and situational question based on things you would encounter in the position. If your score is adequate, you will receive a phone interview with a current management employee. This was a relatively easy interview and turned into an enjoyable conversation. They asked me about my experience and qualifications and some standard interview questions. We also discussed opportunities and the impact of working at Amazon. If you pass this interview, you will move to an in person interview. In my experience, this involved driving across the state. They did provide me with a rental care and hotel room, since the interview started early in the morning. There was a group of 7 apllicants, and we started off by taking a tour of the facility from one of the trainers. We then all gathered in a meeting room and were given a long-form math problem to solve, I believe we had 10 or 15 minutes. It asked about production output based on number of employees working a certain amount of hours. It was fairly simple, if you write it out logically. Later on, a more difficult version is asked with an added variable and you have to complete it in a small room with one of the interviewers right next to you. Throughout the day you move individually to 4-5, 45 minute interviews with different managers. One of those being the second math question, which they don't mention. They each had a focused topic that they based their questions on. I recommend studying up on their leadership principals, and how to answer questions using the STAR method (Situation, task, action, and results.) They are very customer centric and are looking for that in your answers too. Overall, it is a very long day. Lasting about 6-7 hours. No meal break but they did provide us with water bottles and snacks, and between each interview you have about a 15 minute break.

      Interview

Assessment, written assessment, four interviews. It was a simple but lengthy process. You will interview with four different individuals, not a panel. So be prepared for a few hours spending 30-40 minutes each. Even if you nail one two or three, if one interview doesn’t go as smooth it can cause you to not get an offer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Three part questions, and what did you learn? Even if your example was spot on with the situation task action and result they still want you to provide an explanation of what you would do differently. Be prepared for this question after examples for every interviewer. They want details and exact data and numbers.

      Interview

The interview process was professional, well-organized, and focused heavily on Amazon’s Leadership Principles. I completed multiple rounds of interviews that included behavioral questions requiring detailed examples using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) format. Interviewers were engaged, asked thoughtful follow-up questions, and seemed genuinely interested in understanding my leadership experience and decision-making process. The most challenging aspect of the process was the depth of behavioral questioning. Candidates should be prepared with specific examples related to leadership, conflict resolution, process improvement, customer focus, and delivering results. Communication throughout the process was timely, and expectations were clearly outlined. While the interview experience was demanding, it provided a fair opportunity to demonstrate skills and experience. Overall, I found the process to be thorough, professional, and reflective of the company’s high standards for leadership roles.

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you had to lead a team through a significant change. How did you gain buy-in, overcome resistance, and what was the outcome?
