I applied online. The process took 12 months. I interviewed at European Commission (Brüssel) in Dec 2018

Online application with field specific questions
Selection for the assesment center phase
Group interview, technical (specialist field) interview, case study, reasoning skills tests
The process is objective since specific skills are measured but the outcomes are strongly tilted towards people already working with the EC / similar organisations.
At the specialist level it is almost impossible to be selected if you come from the private sector, no matter your experience.
