Briefly drove a cab in NYC. Your figures are close. Here are expenses: 1. Lease - $100 for a twelve hour shift (2 years ago. Different now? Don't know) Bear in mind that you can only drive for 11 of those twelve hours. Gotta figure in breaks and paperwork and getting gas etc. 2. Gas - You only need one tank of gas in my experience. That's about $40. So total expenses are about $140 per day. The average fare you will receive is about $9.00. You can average about 3 fares per hour. That's 33 times 9 coming in. So your daily revenue is about $300. 300 - 140 gives 160. These are fairly optimistic numbers. The average is probably more like $100 per day and it's hard work. I did not enjoy it, so I quit after a couple of months.

assuming 12 hour shifts, he needs 2 tanks of gas ($100 in NYC). He needs a take home of $20 / hour ($140). $10/h for the car, insurance, damage and other vehicle-related costs ($120). Another $100 for miscellaneous costs (referrals, wasted time / loss, etc.). So, he'd have to at least make $460 just to cover his costs and with a margin of error of about 10%, that's somewhere between $400 and $500 per day. Does anyone know how much a cabbie in NYC actually makes?
