I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Walmart in May 2012
Interview
Initial application is online, requiring a multiple choice personality profiling questionnaire of around 70 questions. There will be a follow-up phone interview by a HR representative, and then a short call by a manager from the store to further evaluate you if you pass the first phone interview. If you pass that, a date will be set for a group interview with ~5 other potential recruits.
The group interview is approximately 2 hours long, and involves a variety of activities, ending with a speed-dating style interview with a selection of the store's managers. If you pass this, a 1-on-1 interview with the store manager will finish the selection process.
This process may be less labyrinthe for non-supercenter Walmarts.

Interview
Once you've applied at their online application station in-store, you can expect a phone call within 2 weeks depending of course on if your application is approved. And the way to get your application approved is to say you are available to work any and all hours except overnight. (unless you want to work overnight) They rarely look at an application if the hours are too restricted in their opinion. Once you get the interview you usually speak with an Asst manager over the area they have you in mind for. Personnel will then send you to a lab for your drug test.

Interview
I applied online and got a phone call in about 3 days. Went in for one on one interview that consisted of about 5 questions. Mostly about handling different types of situations. After 3 more days, they called to arrange a panel interview with three dept. people. Consisted of 4 questions that were repetitious of the first interview. 5 days later I was asked to come in for a "job Offer". The job offer consisted of me signing a couple of forms. They did not tell me a job title, schedule or payscale until I asked her. She finally told me the pay rate. I was also told that I would not be eligible for a raise or any benefits til I had been there a year.
Each time I was there early and they ran consistently 15 - 30 min. late.
