Trial details Treatment Description "Overall trial description: We are conducting a tree trial in 36 total kebeles of 3 woredas (districts) to test different potential smallholder tree production/distribution trial arms. The primary focus of the trial was to learn the economic impact to farmers, the operational feasibility and SROI of each model and to determine whether any of the trial arms had good SROI and scalability potential for the future. All three woredas were in the same agro-ecological zone which is common across large parts of Ethiopia, but each had a different current-adoption profile for trees (low, medium and high). We offered a bundle of inputs for one economically impactful tree species and provided uniform training services to all nurseries across all treatments. Field Agents were assigned to four sites each, including one of each treatment arms and a control site, and sites were rigorously balanced during randomization." T1: Farmer tree kits Individual farmers given tree kits (sockets and seeds) and training. They grow their own seedlings then plant them. T2: Group tree kits Groups of farmers given tree kits (sockets, seeds, watering can) and training. They grow their own seedlings and plant them. T3: Kebele-level outgrower nurseries Entrepreneurs given nursery starter kits (sockets, seeds, tools and local material costs) to produce seedlings, then OAF bought seedlings less cost of kits, and then distributed trees for free to farmers in the village.

Social Return on Investment (SROI) SROI is essentially a measure of the efficiency of our donor contributions. Some organizations have very impactful programs, but they are so expensive that other uses of the donor's capital might be better. Using SROI as a decision-making metric helps ensure we can deliver as much impact as possible with limited resources. There are of course moral questions of whether it is better to help fewer people a lot vs more people a little. OAF has a floor of $25 of impact per farmer for any intervention. Here is a high-level summary of the method:
