Your personal sphere of influence:
As a university assistant, you will join the Vienna Doctoral School of Theology and Research on Religion VDTR and become part of your supervisor’s research team. The VDTR is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Faculty of Protestant Theology, and the Research Centre Religion and Transformation. Its supervising members bring diverse disciplinary backgrounds and strong track records in theology and religion-related research. Doctoral candidates participate in a vibrant network spanning Alevi, Islamic, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant theology, as well as religious studies, Islamic studies, Jewish studies, and philosophy of religion.
Most of your time will be devoted to your doctoral thesis. You will also contribute to publications and presentations, support VDTR activities—such as organizing meetings, conferences, and symposia with your peers—and take part in teaching, including independent teaching as defined by the collective agreement and agreed with your supervisor.
As an interdisciplinary doctoral school, we seek colleagues who are curious about and open to interdisciplinary dialogue.
Your future tasks:
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:
You are involved in research projects.
You work on your dissertation and its completion. We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
This is part of your personality:
Completed Master's degree or Diploma in Alevi, Catholic, Islamic, Orthodox, or Protestant theology,
religious studies, Jewish studies, Islamic studies, philosophy, or a related field (applications before degree
completion are possible; the degree must be completed by 31 August 2026)
Basic experience in academic writing and discipline-specific research methods
Didactic competence and relevant IT/e-learning skills for your research field
Excellent written and spoken command of English or German (C1), with good command of the other
language
Team player with good social skills; interdisciplinary research experience an asset
What we offer:
The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
