Pros

Good benefits with some very knowledgeable and experienced employees. Decent PTO and sick time with a wide arrange of positions available. CEO seems to be running the company in a good direction.

Cons

Little to no upward growth unless you're willing to switch teams and departments every couple of years or constantly kiss up to management. This lack of upward growth causes a pretty high turnover rate with most employees working 3-5 years before leaving (similar to the Amazon dilemma). HR is terrible at supporting employees and addressing complaints. HR will always protect management even if provided with documented proof of mismanagement or falsified performance reviews. Micromanagement is rampant and despite "agility" being a primary company-wide metric to improve, management consistently introduces more red tape and resists new ideas for improved workflow efficiency. Too many meetings consist of planning with no action being done. Managers that are new to leadership positions receive very little training, leading to many poorly run teams and contributing to high turnover rate. Salary is not as competitive as other companies unless you aggressively negotiate during hiring process. PIPs are implemented as a way to push out current employees for cause, not as a genuine attempt to improve employee performance.

Pros

The benefits are hard to beat. Great people. If you don’t like travel that’s great because they are getting away from travel for CRAs (and I mean in normal, non-COVID times). Trip report writing is barely existent.

Cons

Very low pay for this industry. Very disorganized- there are too many systems that no one really knows how to use, are redundant, yet you are expected to use. Monitoring is a low priority - even though that’s your job title. Being a good monitor is not truly recognized when it comes to performance review, only “initiatives”, like being on round tables etc. There are a tremendous amount of calls just to have calls. Communication is a challenge, as everything must be said in the correct way and to the correct person (no talking to someone not in your escalation chain.) When it comes to oncology, upper management is far too involved in what CRAs do and they refuse to listen to input from experienced CRAs. They create business “solutions” that do not work well in the medical field. The quality of sites are not important as long as you get sites that promise to give you patients. Everything is about enrollment and query numbers. What actually happens once patients are on study gets far less attention.

Pros

If you get the right manager, compensation and benefits are good.

Cons

Bullying and backstabbing behaviors permitted and practiced all the way up to the top, particularly in corporate functions. I witnessed behavior at AbbVie by senior management that would not be permitted at other companies. Also, the culture is Abbott-centric and often incompetent people are placed in positions of great responsibility without any qualifications other than they worked at Abbott and tell management what they want to hear. There is a general aversion to risk and managers are reluctant to act on ideas that come from new employees who didn't work at Abbott. Also, there is NO capacity to push back on bad ideas coming from management. Delivering bad news is another no-no. The backstabbing was really the last straw and reason why I left for another role at a different company. Normal companies wouldn't permit such obvious sabotage but, at AbbVie, it is seemingly encouraged by some managers. Apparently, they learned this behavior from Abbott according to people with Abbott experience.
