Great place to work

Pros

Super smart colleagues, interesting work, great comp. Company is very ambitious and doesn't want to rest on its laurels which is pretty rare at this size. Tech stack is a mix of cutting edge and legacy systems so not really a pro or con, you get to use some very cool tech but also need to be willing to get your hands dirty. Also I don't doubt other recent reviews as teams vary massively, but personally my team is very diverse, my code has been running on Linux for years and I've never had the pleasure of meeting anyone from Deutsche Bank.

Cons

There's a big split in the company between research facing roles and everyone else, and there shouldn't be. Poorly managed replatforming project has wasted a lot of time over the past few years. Communication could be better sometimes.

Pros

G-Research has been doing a lot in the last few years to reel in its over zealous security, which has made some things much less painful than they were. They have also made benefits better recently, and now have a competitive pension.

Cons

The security issues are still there - it can take a long time to get anything done and information is often very poorly disseminated. There are also some cultural issues - GR is a medium sized company still learning how to be medium sized, rather than small. There are still a number of people around that could at one point name everyone in the company, and the company still has a 'hero' culture because of it that significantly undervalues team players who don't value selling themself over all else and lets people deemed heros do basically whatever they want with no oversight or questioning (aside from security concerns).
