Pros

With the exception of management, the people.

Cons

Working at Hopper turned out to be a truly disappointing and frustrating experience. From the moment I joined the company, it became evident that the promises made during the hiring process did not align with the reality of the workplace. Here are some of the reasons why my time at Hopper was far from satisfying: Poor Work-Life Balance: Hopper claims to promote a healthy work-life balance, but in reality, it seemed like an empty promise. The workload was consistently overwhelming, leaving me with little time for personal life or self-care. The company's expectations were often unrealistic, leading to burnout and constant stress. Lack of Communication: Communication within the company was abysmal. Important information was not effectively disseminated, and it often felt like teams were working in silos. The lack of clear communication channels hindered collaboration and made it difficult to align on goals and objectives. Toxic Work Environment: The work environment at Hopper was toxic and demoralizing. The company culture seemed to prioritize competitiveness over cooperation. Rather than fostering a supportive atmosphere, there was a pervasive sense of cutthroat competition, which negatively affected teamwork and overall morale. Inadequate Management: The management at Hopper left much to be desired. There was a clear lack of leadership and direction, which resulted in confusion and a lack of clarity on priorities. Feedback and guidance were scarce, making it challenging to grow professionally or feel valued as an employee. Limited Growth Opportunities: Despite promises of growth and advancement, it was evident that Hopper did not prioritize the development of its employees. Opportunities for career progression were minimal, and the company seemed more focused on short-term goals rather than investing in the long-term success of its workforce. Compensation and Benefits: The compensation and benefits package at Hopper were underwhelming, considering the demands and expectations placed on employees. It was disappointing to see that the company did not adequately recognize and reward the hard work and dedication of its staff. In conclusion, my experience at Hopper was far from positive. The combination of poor work-life balance, ineffective communication, a toxic work environment, inadequate management, limited growth opportunities, and subpar compensation made it a regrettable choice for employment. I would caution others considering working at Hopper to carefully evaluate their options and weigh the potential negatives before making a decision.

Pros

Some very good managers on various teams Many highly skilled engineers and customer service staff worked there Some good technology and branding

Cons

They'll just straight up fire you with no cause or explanation of any kind even if you've worked there for several years. They seem to have an internal unspoken policy of firing any employee that takes medical leave, regardless of tenure. Any employee can and will be let go at any time with no performance reviews, PIP or even explanation if they feel like it or if you make a mistake. They take advantage of employees, promise big things and then don't deliver (such as unlimited time off). They will encourage you to be available for work 24/7 to meet deadlines or solve issues on the spot if you are in the position of holding some form of Single Threaded Ownership. However, in many cases, a team is simply not given the necessary tools to complete a task and the expectations for that team are unreasonable, leading to extreme stress in many cases, and often, burn out. It would appear that several of my respected colleagues were also laid off during 2022 after several explicit company-wide promises that they would not do any layoffs in 2022. Several of whom had been solid, dedicated employees for several years. Having had some contact with the CEO I feel that he fundamentally believes this company will somehow become the next Amazon if he just keeps pushing people to the max and firing anyone that isn't a top performer that quarter. Having discussed the matter of employee retention for the CS team with the CEO myself, he absolutely does not care about the people working for them and has no consideration that the employees (especially in customer service) are actually human with expectations of a adequate compensation when asked to maintain unreasonable work schedules. He does not believe it is necessary to provide service staff with any sort of decent working atmosphere which leads me to believe he also does not care about the customers beyond growth metrics and review scores, which can be, and usually are, easily manipulated. I do believe there is a lot of talent in the management and engineering teams at this company but I seriously question the outlook of the executive team on long term stability and on the ability for a team to provide quality service without adequate tools, compensation or respect in the workplace for those providing customer service. Frankly, the data infrastructure also seemed very messy to me and it was really non-existent for customer service due to tooling when I left the CS team. A lot of improvements have been made since but it was a mess when I left and the CS team's hands were tied on hiring and tooling due to a lack of visibility.

Pros

The company is going through a rapid growth phase at the moment which provides amazing opportunities to build products from the ground up and see them scale. The culture is very product focused. The caliber of engineers is inspiring. You can wear multiple hats and develop horizontally, as well as dive deep and specialize. Overall the company has done very well over the last year and is ripe for becoming a leader in travel industry.

Cons

With the hyper growth come it’s challenges. People who are more autonomous will thrive. You need to know what you want and go get it. The culture is still in flux and there has been some turnover in the upper management lately, but I’m hopeful about the future.
