Pros

Work Life Balance / Telecommuting flexibility for working mothers/parents Great employee engagement activities (socials, family picnics, bring your child to work day, etc). Phenomenal training and development for hard and soft skills (development programs, leadership programs, fast track and graduate programs) Excellent mentoring AND sponsorship of outperforming employees Compensation was very competitive with the marketplace (but in order to retain and attract good employees it was almost a given)

Cons

The company has been decimated to less than a third of its original size due to bad M&A deals from the top of the house. Instability due to fragile size creates volatility in roles and future of employment

Pros

I worked on an operational excellence programme at a number of UK sites and met many competent, enthusiastic, hard-working people who wanted to make a difference and provide a good service to customers. They were generous with their time and in providing information we needed to try to improve processes and performance. I was genuinely impressed by the knowledge and professionalism of many of the underwriters and technical experts.

Cons

Other contractors commented that the RSA culture was "like the public sector". I said, "No, it's like the public sector was 25 years ago". Poor decision making, lack of willingness to take responsibility or be held accountable for performance, lack of transparency about activities that were going to have a major impact on people's livelihoods. Muddled management lines, a plethora of "systems", and poor use of the key systems that could have supported improved performance. When you see people wheeling trolleys loaded with paper files from A to B you wonder if this really is the 21st century.

Pros

Absolutely none, did not enjoy the experience, stayed far too long. Redundancy was my saviour.

Cons

Bullying was terrible. Only saving grace was that the bully left to join another local insurer before getting the boot. We all laughed when we found out that the new employer sacked him on the last day of his 12 month probationary period. Karma is good.
