Pros

Lockheed Martin has talented and quality engineers. You get to work on exciting and innovative projects. There is a wide range of work across many work locations.

Cons

Technology seems to always be ten years behind the times. Too much of the leadership refuses to make risky decisions, and the primary customer is unwilling and incapable of accepting change.

Pros

Lockheed Martin had a very good program called ELDP which was great for obtaining breadth and learning a lot of new technologies and domains. Additionally, being in ELDP, Lockheed will pay for your full grad degree, up to a pretty high maximum. Lockheed has a lot of very engaging government contracting programs, it may take a few years of maneuvering, but you could find a very interesting and enjoyable job at Lockheed. Additionally, Lockheed takes care of a lot of there people. Especially if you have the right set of managers, you could easily stay at Lockheed your entire career.

Cons

The pay for performance structure seems to be slightly broken, and during uncertain times it is very difficult to get a promotion, even if you exceed all of the requirements. Additionally, a large portion of the developers in the company are being moved to a services pay ledger which will pretty much freeze any pay increases that you were expecting in the next 5 years. ELDP has been significantly modified, so it is not nearly as attractive as it was before. For example, when I started my master's degree Lockheed agreed that they would pay for the full degree as long as I worked for them at least a year after the degree. 1 year into my masters degree they changed this requirement to 2 years. Additionally, when I first started at Lockheed their health insurance was quite affordable, in my 5 years it has gone up over 400%. My yearly pay raises barely make up for these increases.

Pros

There is a real disposition to work/life balance. Flexible hours are the norm. That said, if you get the wrong management crew you might be under pressure to work long weeks - but at flexible times. It certainly is of value when raising a family. Salary is good. Company is becoming extremely cheap ("the new reality"!) but they do keep promises. And they make a strong effort not to lay people off. There is an encouragement towards diversity of workforce and diversity of thought. Managers are generally well-trained and have good perspective beyond the crises of the day.

Cons

There is not a particular bent towards software development. It shows. You need to go through layers of process to as much as download a free IDE onto your PC. We're frequently the opposite of tech savvy (not sure if there is a term). A mania towards security, combined with layers of beauracracy on purchasing or even downloading software tools, does discourage innovation. The company is full of older workers desperately trying to hang on - and do any job - long enough for their pension to kick in. Major topics of conversation ere are early retirements and whether individuals will survive long enough to get their pensions - not solving problems and creating things. There is not an effective base for software management where I work. I've seen high-profile efforts run badly by "manager"s who have no real life experience, and who flounder and cause chaos. This company knows how to build many things, but not so much software.
