-Career development isn't a real thing at Medtronic. It happens on paper, annually via the goal-setting process, and usually isn't deliberately championed by managers (leaders use the cop-out phrase "you really own your career here")
-Professional development is usually supported in name only, too. This is different from career devt. in terms of it focusing on the more tactical activities/courses/trainings/etc. that might help you advance in your CAREER. Even if your manager SAYS they're willing to fund prof devt. opportunities for you, that funding will usually get cut in order manage expenses right before the end of the quarter. Yet... it happens Every. Single. Quarter.
-If you want to explore different jobs within Medtronic, if you apply to them, your boss is notified. You might not even get an INTERVIEW for the role, your boss will still know if you apply. And it's not uncommon for you to NOT get that interview because your boss interceded via HR bc "losing headcount right now would put XYZ initiatives at risk."
-At Medtronic, you won't move up in your career unless you make the right friends. You could be an absolute all-star and still not get promoted because you're not on the right people's radar. I know this is common in lots of companies, but Medtronic does it really well. I don't think HR has even heard the word "meritocracy," let alone know what it means.
