I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at ASDA (Aberdeen, Schottland) in Oct 2012
Interview
The interview process consists of two stages. The first stage is a group interview which happens in the evening. The store cafe is closed at that time so you are asked to wait there until everyone arrives. I am not sure but there is a high chance that you are being observed from that point. The group interview is very informal, you will work in pairs or groups of three. The main tasks were to introduce you partner and to try to sell a mystery item. At the end of the interview, you fill out an availability questionnaire and state a first and second preference for department.
If successful at the group stage, you will receive a call inviting you to an individual interview with the department manager of either your first or second choice department. The interview questions are very standard then the manager will take you to the shop floor to give you a feel of what the job would be like including trying to find three items on the shop floor. At the end of the interview, they may offer you a job on the spot or you may receive a call a couple of days later to offer the job.

Question 1
The most unexpected question I received was at the group interview stage asking if you were a chocolate bar, which would you be.
Relaxed and fun, not too serious and some team building activities to take part in. Group work and then individual questions afterwards included. Not too stressful but covered everything I would expect in an interview for a company of the sized
It was a short individual interview with a single member of staff, very similar to other interviews of the same industry, very straight forward with simple open ended questions. The whole process took under half an hour.

Question 1
Basic interview questions about past experience in retail and customer service, team working etc
We were sat in a room of around 15 people. Around 4 employees watching us from the sides, and one employee leading the interview. They had us first introduce ourselves to the group, and then had us get together in small teams and do little exercises, just silly stuff, such as making a house out of spaghetti and marshmallows. Silly tasks, but what they're watching is how you interact with people. They then showed us a bunch of videos of higher ups talking about ASDA and what they stand for. It was an easy going, welcoming experience. Everyone who was normal got hired.
