I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Amazon
Interview
I was asked to give an online assessment test as the first round. It consisted of 2 easy string based questions and around 24 reasoning questions. The coding round was for 70 minutes and the reasoning questions had to be done in 34 min. You could compile your code and check if you pass all the test cases before submitting.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Mar 2015
Interview
Initially contacted on LinkedIn by a recruiter and asked if I would be interested in interviewing. After a very basic screening call with the recruiter, I was told that I will be contacted shortly about starting the interview process.
Within one week I had a technical phone interview where I was asked a single question with multiple parts. The next day, I was emailed about flying to Seattle for in-house interviews.
Amazon scheduled and paid for the travel and lodging as well as reimbursed meals and taxi charges while visiting.
The in-house interview was a series of 4 one hour interviews, each with a member of a different team. 2 were managers, the other 2 were SD II.
Each interview consisted of ~20 minutes of personal interview and the rest was technical. The interviews were in no particular order of difficulty. My third interview was the "bar-raiser".
I think the difficulty of the interviews are over-exaggerated online. Just stay calm, be friendly, and take your time. The interview is a piece of cake if you know your stuff and don't panic.
Phone interview with Human resources department. A week later I got an email for technical phone interview. There was online coding question and few oral technical questions. There was couple of behavioral questions also.
