I applied on Jan 6, 2026, and received a HireVue interview request online on Jan 29. After submitting the interview, it took 2 weeks to hear back from the Recruiter. The Recruiter called to inform me that my compensation expectations exceeded what they were offering and did not align with the posted range. After I clarified that my comp expectations translate to double my experience compared to the role requirements, I was told they can’t match, given the comps of existing Directors. After the conversation, the Recruiter informed me that the first round would be in person with the hiring managers. Given the limited availability of the interviewing Directors, I requested consideration of a Zoom interview to accommodate the commuting challenges of both parties, including tolls, weather, and parking costs. She urged that the HMs wanted an in-person interview, which was unappreciative, given that there was a snowstorm the day before. Upon reaching the destination, parking was hard to find, which was connected to the building where American Express was located. Despite arriving on time, the person who escorted me had no idea where the interview room was. Upon finally arriving at the interview room on time, one of the interviewing Directors was late. During the interview, the Directors were unable to answer my questions and stated they weren’t the HMs, which was surprising given what the Recruiter had told me. I received positive feedback from one of the directors, who said my responses were “bang on,” and escorted me out. Despite the positive feedback and the week-and-a-half wait, I was not considered for the second round of interviews, and it will be almost 2 months before the second rounds are scheduled, with this process estimated to take over 2 months. Overall, the process is extremely lengthy, inconsiderate of candidates’ expectations or experience for the role, and the compensation range is misstated in the job posting. I would keep the interview timelines in mind before considering a role with American Express.
