I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Apple in Oct 2021
Interview
5 Stages, the first 3 are technical and the last 2 are related to the design challenge they gave. The design challenge was simple but fumbled the last panel presentation. The technical questions were not that difficult. The typical ME questions on beams, heat transfer, physics, CAD.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Cantilever beam questions; change in stiffness etc.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Apple
Interview
Still in progress
First interview was about 45 minutes long via WebEx
Straight into technical questions without any behavioral questions
Questions were such as:
How to connect gear to shaft in multiple different ways
Cantilever beam question asking areas of maximum stress and the type of stress
Does the shape of the beam affect stress
If you were to design a battery spring what are the main parameters that you would consider?

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Apple in Sep 2018
Interview
The first round was from on campus college recruitment. I was given 2 minutes to talk to the recruiter and was asked to come back later for a 30 minute interview. The recruiter didn't get back to me for over a month, and then told me they wanted a second interview. I did an hour long phone interview with the manager. I received an offer after the second interview.

Question 1
Pretty typical mechanical engineering questions. Know your material stress/strain curves and fundamentals of beam bending. They will keep asking questions until you don't know how to answer.
