I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Canva in May 2021
Interview
3 types of interviews:
- 30 min screening interview to gauge your knowledge on JS + ES6 concepts and ability to interpret code snippets
- 60 min technical interview assessing your ability to probe questions, effectively communicate your thought process and explain how you’re going to solve a problem. These qualities are more favoured than the depth of technical skill. When I wasn’t sure of how to approach a problem, they would suggest a potential topic I could look into and I used mdn docs to understand how to use it. I think they like it when you can demonstrate your ability to be resourceful especially in situations where you don’t know the answers.
- 30 min values interview chatting with someone. I don’t know what they assess here but I felt like I just had a really relaxing and genuine conversation with another person.
Lastly got a catch up zoom call to discuss feedback and status of my application
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Canva (Melbourne) in Jun 2021
Interview
Was sought out via LinkedIn by HR recruiter. Had first 30min phone call, second interview was to present a product that you had evolved over time and how I developed the vision, roadmap and bought the team on the journey to two other Product managers (in a different team). This task was a strange one for the very first interview as it required a lot of work to pull this all together. I was provided some feedback as to why I didn't progress which was very basic stuff, making me think it wasn't genuine or they were an unhealthy level of perfectionist. The feedback was the metrics we used to measure the product success weren't the same as theirs. I mentioned from the very start I manage data products not tech so these would of course would be different. If this experience in data versus tech was an issue they shouldn't have put me through to the presentation interview... save us all a lot of time! The salary was also quite below average and I mentioned it was lower than I'd expected in the first chat and I was met with "we can't move on the salary, we match Atlassian salaries"... cool.

Interview
Everyone was kind, friendly, and accommodating. The interview and tests were challenging but fun. They asked practical questions and if I'm familiar with the platform. I enjoyed the entire interview process.
