I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Google (Dallas, TX) in Apr 2016
Interview
First off the recruiters are awesome. The process was in 4 steps starting with a email interview, a phone call, a design test, and a final interview in-house. Great process and really fun test.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
They really asked about my portfolio and case-studies and why I choose to make the decision I did in my previous work.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Google (New York, NY) in Mar 2016
Interview
This is regarding the phone interview. Interviewer first introduced himself and I was mainly asked about my work process. There were many questions related to user testing. The reception was terrible and I couldn't hear what the guy was saying more than half the time. I remember I said pardon? excuse me? could you repeat?.. about hundred times. Even through such bad environment, I still tried as best as I could.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Google (Mountain View, CA) in May 2015
Interview
The process began with a portfolio review over the phone, in which a designer gave me a call and asked me about several of the projects on my portfolio and the design processes that went into them. It was a very straightforward discussion with no curveballs or anything of that ilk.
After passing that phase, the next step was a "design exercise" for which I was given the choice between several different design problems to solve. I chose one and submitted my response, which was evidently good enough to move on to the next phase.
Having passed the design exercise, I was flown out to Mountain View for an on-site interview. The primary component of this was a 1-hour presentation to a panel of Google designers, which consisted of my design exercise solution as well as additional details about some of my portfolio projects. Following the presentation, I had individual interviews with each of those designers.
While I felt that all the interviews had gone quite smoothly, about a week later I unfortunately received a call stating that my application had been rejected by the "hiring committee". While I was really disappointed, the process itself wasn't bad, and it certainly was better organized than any other company I interviewed at.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Questions during the individual on-site interviews tended to be standard design interview + behavioral interview fare, such as "design a system for...", "tell me about a time when...", etc.
