      Support Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Google (Mountain View, CA) in Feb 2010

      Interview

I applied online through Google's website. I also applied through another job website and a friend's referral. Not sure which one got me noticed. First, I had a phone interview with an engineer in my position. He asked some technical questions, some resume questions, and a hypothetical example related to the job area. Afterwards I emailed a thank you letter to my recruiter. Good advice after any interview. Then the recruiter called and invited me to Mountain View. There was some confusion on his part because we made a date over the phone, but I never got the details over email. Then he chose a day that didn't work for me, so I had to reschedule. It took a long time, but I finally got a 1:1 interview. Typical Google interview - 7 or so interviewers in one day. Half of the questions were about my resume and seeing if I fit with the company culture. 25% short programming, algorithm, run-time analysis questions. 25% dealing with the group's focus or simulating a popular consumer product. No brainteasers. Enough time to ask my own questions. I ate lunch too, which was delicious although it reminded me of college dining halls. Google's offices are just five story buildings with cubicles and occasional decorations. I expected a crazy resort, but maybe it was just me. After a week I emailed my recruiter for an update and got a rejection email. Disappointing because I thought I did really well on my 1:1 interview.

Phone interview after speaking to several recruiters. Everyone I spoke with was extraordinary polite. Lots of behavior questions: motivating teammates, working with entry level employees, dealing with the stress of long hours. Far fewer technical questions than expected. Plenty of time to ask questions at the end with honest feedback.
