I was invited in and asked questions. A lot of back and forth. Very nice people. I think my answers weren't exactly what they were looking for. They seemed to have specific answers in mind.
Started with a technical screening, then a behavior call, then an online coding interview where they watched as you coded and you had to talk through the problem. After passing they, flew onsite for 6 interviews in the same day of whiteboard coding problems.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Google (Mountain View, CA) in Feb 2017

One phone screen, then an on-site with 5 interviews. Four of the five interviews were standard data structures and algorithms. The last was a discussion of my PhD research
