I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Intel Corporation
Interview
I applied for a graduate summer internship at Intel labs. I was referred by a colleague and directly e-mailed the person in charge of the internship. After a few weeks they e-mailed me asking about a convenient time for a phone interview.
The interview lasted about an hour and was mostly related to my recent research. I was asked to describe the project related to what I was applying fore and the questions were in the form of "how would you change it if such and such conditions were changed". There was no right or wrong answer to their question, I discussed my suggestions, they asked some sub-questions.
Some short questions from things stated in my CV were asked but they did not ask me to elaborate. I was interviewed by two persons and they were very pleasant and friendly.
I asked them as well about the working conditions, they talked about the office, staff structure, gave me details about the project and even tips for outdoor activities.

Question 1
Nothing in particular. As long as you know your research, you're fine.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Intel Corporation (Santa Clara, CA) in Jan 2013
Interview
I had two phone interviews with two members of the team. First interview was not great but the second one was great. They asked me about the skills needed to do the internships and also about my PhD work. They needed someone for a long term internship like 9 months or more. I was OK with that.

Question 1
Before preparing for the phone screen, have a good look at the job req. Make sure you advertise those of your skill that are needed for the job. It is ok not to have all the skills. Nobody has that.
