I met an employee during a campus visit in November of 2007. When someone in her team was looking for an intern, she recommended that he call me. I received an email from her colleague in March of 2008 requesting a phone interview, and he interviewed me on the phone 2 days later. He offered me the job, again over the phone, 4 days after our interview.
During the interview, we talked about my approach to research, my experience writing code, my expectations for an internship during graduate school. I was not asked to solve any specific problems but I was asked to provide examples of both my academic and technical work. The interview was more like a conversation than like an interview. He did tell me that being recommended by one of his colleagues was a big boost for me.
