I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at The Home Depot (San Rafael, CA) in Jan 2008
Interview
You have to apply through the website, and pick the store you want to work at. Then you talk with the HR at the store level with a face-to-face. For hourly spots, they often will have pre-printed/chosen questions to ask, based a terrible computer program they rolled out not too long ago, and your own background. There isn't anything formal, you just have to not sound like a complete moron. For salary, you talk with the store manager, and it's a longer process, (though usually futile because they typically promote from within).

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at The Home Depot (San Jose, CA) in Dec 2011
Interview
Interviewed with two assistant managers. Most questions were concerning my overall attitude. Was I willing to or interested in helping others. My answer was yes. They were interested in my personal experiences and general knowledge. They do not only look at people who are professional plumbers, carpenters, etc. They will teach you what you need to know to answer customers questions and give the customer the guidance they need.
