I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at The Home Depot (Deerfield, IL) in Jan 2011
Interview
First you search thru the THD job site to find openings in your area and the you apply on line. You have 10 choices and should start with the largest stores in the area as they usually need new employees.
As expected I was contacted within 1 week, interviewed and hired within 2 more.
The interview was short and they hired me immediately.
When they ask you to tell them about yourself, you layout a short outline about how your talents would add to the THD Team and company success. I used all the 'bullet point' and keywords that I had written down from all of their web content. Always speak in the terms that they use like: 'The Home Depot Way' or Team Orange', memorize their Wheel of company ethics and touch on those keys points. But keep it to ~ 5-8 minutes length.
Connect your past work experience with specific advantages to their customer requirements, which like all retail is based 99% on customer communication skills.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Usually pissed off customers or how you would handle situations that require a judgment decision. You will always get pissed off customers - happens for reasons outside of THD, just how you deal with it - listen and pass it along to management, same thing with judgment calls always refer to your next up.
I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at The Home Depot (South Florida, FL)
Interview
First step was a short phone interview, then they scheduled an interview a few days later at the local store. The Assistant Manager and another member of the management team interviewed me. The AM asked me to tell him about myself and why I wanted to work at the Home Depot. Then they asked me 6 questions, 3 about cashiering and 3 others were for a sales associate position. They were both very nice and easygoing and I felt really comfortable.
I didn't get a call back for about a month when they asked me if I was still interested in working at the Home Depot, I said yes and scheduled an interview with the store manager.
The manager asked me what I knew about the Home Depot as a company and what would make me a good cashier. Then he told me I was pretty much unofficially hired, but I just needed to pass my drug test and background check. A week later I did and was asked to come in that same morning to sign all the paperwork.

Question 1
For me it was "tell me about a time when a costumer was upset and how you solved the problem" because I hadn't been able to solve the problem for that guest at a previous job.
