I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at U.S. Department of State (New York, NY) in Jan 2017
Interview
I found the online application through USA Jobs. I filled out a pretty extensive online questionnaire where I ranked locations for desired internship posting (specific embassies abroad or D.C.). This was followed by a phone interview and then, upon selection, was followed by a security/background investigation.
