I applied through college or university. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at U.S. Department of State
Interview
I can only tell you about the Civil Service route. Applying to the state department online can be very difficult, unless you have veterans points, qualify for disabilities points, or applying through your college or university. The process no matter is very competitive for civil service jobs. The interview was pretty basic once I was contacted by a hiring director, the interview was similar to most interview.

Question 1
Nothing was difficult once I made to the interview. The best advice I can give is to start applying through a fellowship, or internship program.
I applied online. The process took 12 months. I interviewed at U.S. Department of State (Washington, DC) in Sep 2021
Interview
The interview process is exactly like what they tell you in the Information Sessions the Dept. of State conducts each month. If you get waitlisted for an interview or schedule an interview, you should get invited to this and attend. The process took me 6 hours, and although they say you can bring food, they don't tell you when you are allowed to eat the food, so take initiative and eat when you have a few minutes between the different parts of the interview. Otherwise, you might starve and do poorly on the interview.

Question 1
I am not allowed to share the questions, but attend the Information Session beforehand, take notes, and listen. They will give you everything you need to succeed in the interview.
