the commander asked me about my credit, my spouse's credit, and whether they needed to know anything that might hurt my chances at a security clearance. I also was asked if I had any drug related offenses or ever smoked or did illegal or illicit drugs.

Walked in to office and spoke with recruiter about jobs in the Navy. I was medically screened and then took my ASVAB. After receiving ASVAB score I spoke with the recruiter about my options for jobs in the Navy.

Interview
Enter the recruiters office. Answer standardized questions about drug use, medical history. Take a standardized exam. Fill in "preferences". Complete background check for security clearance. Wait for approval with frequent meetings with recruiter and accompanying urinalysis.

Drug use? Recruiters are extremely paranoid about the use of any drug and must fill out a great deal of paper work for an affirmative answer.
