Phone screen with the recruiter, technical challenge online with some coding. technical interview, finally a panel consisting of two interviews with 2 employees in each. In hindsight, a few red flags now stand out such as:
- the technical challenge and technical interview had a lot of overlap. the interviewer admitted to having no idea what was in the challenge which made both seem redundant to an extent.
- what the recruiter prepped me for was very different from what the panel consisted of. understand that while the role would be vast, i felt set up for failure.
- expanding off of the previous point, the panel interviews felt very unstructured. interviewers would stall and pull questions out of thin air which made the overall conversation feel disorganized as we bounced back and forth among different topics.
- no phone screen or panel interview with the manager - they're apparently too busy to interview for their own team.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at VMware in Aug 2016
Interview
Quite fair interview process.
Started with a phone screen with an interviewer, explaining how each stage of the process would unfold, followed by a 90-minute HackerRank test.
On successful completion of that test, three one hour technical interviews with team member across the globe followed, and another hour interview with team management, explaining the team organization and mission.
All in all, very respectful and professional process, and quite pleasing to go through.

Question 1
Since the team works mostly on Application Security, a lot of questions regarding vulnerabilities and mitigations at different layers and system levels, which, if you are serious about working in security, you should at least have an overall understanding about.
