      Frontend Developer Interview

      Feb 25, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Helsinki, Südfinnland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at Wolt (Helsinki, Südfinnland) in Feb 2021

      Interview

The interview process was 4 weeks long. First interview was with the recruiter and second one with the team lead. Those interviews were nice, and I got really good feel about Wolt from them. What really let me down was the technical interview part. After the interview with the team lead, they gave me a home assignment task. The task was to create a web app from scratch that renders restaurant's opening hours from a .json file. It looked like a very simple task at first. The task was supposed to be completed like if it was a real problem in production. Even though the task was supposed to resemble a real problem in production, it did not. It gave a very basic UI design of the component in a pdf file, and the json data structure was very poorly designed for the use case. If it was a real problem in production, there would be some kind of codebase to build the feature on, but this task had to be started from scratch. Also, UI design would be given in a more advanced tool than just a pdf file, for example in figma. Time required to complete the task was supposed to be about 1 work day (7,5 hours), which is already a lot. It actually could not have been completed perfectly even in 2 work days. Even though the task did not mention it, they actually required you to write perfect unit tests, and to make pixel perfect UI with mobile responsivity from a single small picture in a pdf file. I didn’t know about the actual requirements of the task before the technical interview. In the technical interview we went through the app I made and the code. I had a very good feeling after the technical interview and to my point of view it went well. I wasted over 10 hours of my time for the task. I got the app working and covered every special case that was mentioned about rendering the opening hours. I matched the design of the component as well as I possibly could have to the picture in the pdf file. I wrote very clean code, even the interviewers said that. I wrote some unit tests, just to show that I can write them, but I did not expect that the coverage needed to be near 100%. I did not focus on mobile responsivity, because the task did not mention it, the UI design didn’t have it and the component was so small that it would only be too large for smartphones from 10 years ago. Also, the responsivity could have been fixed with a single line of css code. Wolt is not that special to ask for so much of the interviewees time. At the moment of writing this review, Wolt has a lot of open developer positions, so I think that this is not about already filling the position. I actually feel insulted after spending so much time for the task and hearing that it was not enough. I should’ve looked at the salary data in glassdoor before going forward with the task. Even that is nothing special…

Thanks for leaving us a review on your interview experience with Wolt, we really appreciate it, yet it sounds like everything didn't go perfectly this time on our end. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the discussions both with your recruiter and the different team members you met, so I'll focus on addressing your feedback towards the assignment and technical interview. Firstly, we appreciate that a hiring process with Wolt will take some time and effort. Our interview process generally consists of 5 steps, out of which the assignment is the most labor intensive for the candidate. We appreciate that it takes quite a bit of time and effort to go through all the steps, but we feel confident every stage exists for a valid reason. Not only are the steps there for us to ensure good fit between our role and your skills and experience, but also for you to get enough of an understanding about Wolt. You have some very valid feedback regarding our assignment scope, and we have already started a project to refine our frontend assignment. In the refined version we'll consider scoping it better to limit time spent (we usually aim our assignments to take 4-7 hours from the candidate at maximum). In terms of the design, while we believe that a frontend developer with a strong visual eye can build a pixel perfect UI from just an image, we don't expect our candidates to do so. While we review the UI implementation and mobile responsively, these are by no means deal breakers in the hiring decision we make nor do we expect pixel perfection. Our review is very comprehensive and we want our candidates to get as thorough feedback as possible. Overall, we don't expect the perfect home assignment. In fact, we've received a precious few solutions in the last few years where we could clearly say that this is the perfect solution to the task - and yet have hire multiple front end developers. Our hiring decision is based on the overall solution, the severity of the potential problems or shortcuts the assignment has and overall performance in the technical interview. Our interviews should always be pleasant and conversational, so I'm happy to hear you had a good feeling on the back of your interview. In our view, you should have a good feeling even though our ultimate decision would be a "no". Again, thank you for providing your feedback, we'll definitively take it into consideration now that we refining the assignment for the future frontend hires. I appreciate this might do nothing to alleviate your disappointment in spending time on the discussions and assignment, but rest assured that we definitively see it as a valuable experience to learn and improve.
