Most of the questions I received were not about the actual job, the department, or even my experience. This was surprising since the first two calls were basically screening interviews. There were (what felt like trick) questions like "define diversity without using the word 'different'" which felt like there was an implied right/wrong answer. This made the early interview process feel more like playing taboo rather than a mutual conversation about determining if there's enough fit between the candidate and the position in order to move forward. Other questions tested my knowledge on the priorities of the broader units that the office I applied to was located in. Although I did my research, I could only glean superficial information about the university's larger development goals for example. Ultimately, I was a bit surprised that none of the questions were about the actual work, skills required, or my experience or approach to the work.
