Design Director Interview Questions
564 design director interview questions shared by candidates
The conversation felt more like an informal chat rather than a structured assessment. There wasn't one particularly memorable or challenging question during the interview. They asked a few very general questions like "Tell me about yourself" and "Why this role?" and had me walk through my portfolio, but there were no in-depth questions about my design process, leadership skills, or how I would approach specific challenges. It seemed like they hadn’t clearly defined what they were looking for, which aligns with the fact that the position had been open for two years, suggesting potential challenges internally with decision-making and clarity around hiring needs.

Describe a time you had to manage a direct report that was not performing to expectations.
The interviews were very casual and human. We talked a little bit about my work and my process. Most of the interview was about what I was looking for and my career goals. It was so refreshing to have an interview that was more of a conversation rather than a bulleted list of questions. The team was genuinely interested in my work and took the time to look at my portfolio before the calls.
