"You sound like a good guy, tell me about yourself". The recruiter led in with a typical HR person's question, which was easy to answer with a canned response. The second question of out his mouth was; "What are you making now?" When I proceeded to tell him that I was not comfortable revealing this information so early on in the process, the recruiter persisted to drill further into this question. When I carefully sidestepped his question by telling him that I would rather tell him about my salary expectations to see if they were in line with what they have budgeted for the position, things took a turn for the unexpected. The recruiter turned belligerent and confrontational, and proceeded to belittle me. He told me that I was out "out of bounds" and that he was about to hang up on me right now. He then proceeded to recount his glory days, and belittle my number of years of experience. At that point, I had enough and politely told the recruiter that there's no need to go further and hung up. I had never come across anything similar in a context of a professional conversation.
