The question of greatest concern was the HR insistence on knowing my past salary. This question is illegal in at least 10 USA states because of a belief that it is often used for discrimination against older workers. It was demoralizing to be asked that question because I was quite willing to accept the lower salary because the organization is interesting. People tend to make up stories in their head about people who once had higher salaries and those stories would not have been true for me.
