Managing Editor Interview Questions

277 managing editor interview questions shared by candidates

The standard strengths/weaknesses questions happened in the first two HR-led interviews (Items 1 and 2 above). Once into items 3 and following, questions were like: 1) How do you go about doing editorial planning? 2) Talk about your editing style, particularly working with writers of varying experience. 3) What is it about B2B writing that appealed to me? (I was coming from a largely B2C background) 4) What would my most recent boss say was my strength? 5) What would that same person say was the biggest challenge working with me? 6) The CEO dropped in and asked me to describe myself in 4 words. That caught me off guard, actually.

Most of the questions were very standard, however they did surprise me by asking repeatedly if I was comfortable working in a slower paced role. This might be due to my own personal preference for a fast-paced environment vs. a standard question.

For the purpose of this project, we’d like you to choose one of those companies and prepare 3 key artifacts that will allow us to produce high quality content for the client. Then, find an existing piece of published content on their site and rewrite the article with the same topic using this context. Collate these artifacts into a brief: Company Context — A comprehensive profile that details the company’s product approach, market positioning, competitive landscape, and strategic direction. This provides the context from which we’ll create content and growth planning for the company. Brand Voice — A structured framework for creating technically precise, audience-appropriate content for the client. For the purposes of this exercise, you can infer the voice they might want to speak in from existing published content and their positioning in the market. Explain your rationale for choosing this brand voice. Audience Personas — Detailed portraits of three key audiences that the company would likely want to target with its content. For each persona, include motivations, pain points and content type preferences. Who are the people they want to reach, and what are their needs? The brief should be 1,000-1,500 words and free of spelling or grammatical errors. The article can be any length that seems appropriate to the topic, but should be client ready and free of common LLM patterns that make it feel lower quality. Expected Time Spent: 90 minutes
