They were specifically looking for some experience with scripting languages like Python - asked me to write a couple of programs. One of them was related to parsing large log files and recognizing patterns (with the use of regular expressions). Then there were the standard white board questions pertaining a random network topology, to walk them through the process of message transfer through the bottom three layers.

The questions were just randomly selected. You either knew them or you didn't. It is ridiculous to believe that a candidate can be evaluated properly on this basis. Apparently this company has yet to realize that IT pros and engineers research and document topics so this sort of memorization is not a necessity. It is far more important if someone can find an answer and problem solve than have answers to random questions memorized.
