For the questions that are not based on candidate's background, they provide basic definitions. The main skill that they assess, is the ability of the candidate to think independently
Most of the questions were related to my research plan and my background. Since I was applying for a multi-disciplinary research school, they were asking also about my affiliation and knowledge of the other two disciplines. I found the academic questions quite challenging.
