How can your profile be useful for our group?
How do you deal with difficult conversations?
Questions were relatively standard, ranging from specific assays to general thoughts on the field. Conversations with other lab members included questions about outside interests and hobbies, to discussions about reasonable places to live in LA. No questions were designed to trip you up, but to get to know you and your experiences.
During the job talk, I was asked a technical question about a very specific aspect of my research.
How long have you been working in x field?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? How would you approach the project? Do you have experience with the industry we are researching?
The questions and discussions were mostly scientific, and evolved about applying previously learned methods and knowledge to future projects. No cliche 'where do you see yourself in 5 years' questions.
What percentage of your publication was written by your PI and what percentage was written by yourself?
My prospective boss asked my thoughts on troubleshooting a particular odd behavior of some of the equipment in their lab.
