Pros

I work at a plant that supplies components for Baldor motors. We are a stamping plant, and process thousands of tons of coiled steel each year. The pay for a Tool Maker is is decent, and for lower skilled employees it offers the chance to make pretty good money with very little skill or training if you don’t mind working hard in a noisy and sometimes very hot environment.

Cons

Since it’s acquisition of Baldor which came with the promise that “nothing would change” There has been an escalating series of changes to working conditions that almost all employees view as detrimental. They talk a good game, and plaster the walls with “happy posters”, but then make unilateral decisions that have a negative effect on the lives of employees. They can of course do this as we are currently non union. Before being acquired by ABB, Baldor was very employee centered and did everything possible to insure employee satisfaction. It’s become obvious over the last few years that to ABB we are just a cost of doing business. Well it was good while it lasted. If you’re considering coming to work at The ABB Baldor St. Louis plant I would recommend caution. Don’t expect today’s benefits to be here tomorrow.

Pros

I honestly cannot think of anything. I guess it would be that I got a paycheck, pay was decent, benefits we decent.

Cons

This is an organization that has simply gotten too large for itself. Employees are really just a number. There is no personal aspect at all and you certainly don't feel appreciated or needed. There is a large amount of turnover and changes (at least 3 per year) of senior management or direction so it is really hard to know your path and do your job. Growth is difficult as there is no conduit between management and employees for mentorship and no defined growth plans. This a very "meeting happy" organization. They love to have meetings....lots of them. Usually very inefficient and a waste of time. More managers than employees is a big reason for this.
