Pros

Pay when the hours are available which tends to be only towards the Christmas season and then it is all downhill.

Cons

Early starts and late finishes. They use the whole mentality of maximising efficiency to slave drive workers. Targets for unloading pallets especially during peak trading hours is ludicrous. The store management teams giving you veiled threats and warnings unnecessarily making you feel your job is vulnerable. Career progression at store level is nigh on non existent and the favouritism is stupendous as well. The area managers virtually offer no support whatsoever and then there is the no existent HR department so if you are not happy with certain issues that you want addressed such as sexism or misogyny then you have very little support at all from top management. The company actively dissuades store employees in particular from joining trade unions as these would as put by my area manager 'disrupt the workings of the business'. It seems they would do anything to make sure that you are not fully aware of your rights at work with them. If they mess up your pay it will only get rectified the following month which is not at all lawful but they could not care one bit. This organisation is designed to reward those at assistant store manager level upwards as that is where the bonus system works from.

Pros

chance to progress from store assistant to deputy manager. good salary if you're the only manager on the shift, running the store, thats 4 pounds extra per hour.

Cons

cutting down on premium hours. only around 1 pound difference between the store assistant and deputy manager wage, but a lot more responsibilities and expectations. no further progression. company prefers to hire ppl from outside other than promote their own ppl. 30 hour contract. if sick even for a day need to bring a doctors sick note, no self certification accepted. holidays being allocated if not all booked in january for the whole year in front. company not keen on training staff. very fast pased, priority on saving money and sending staff home early other than having full and tidy shelves.

Pros

If you get a great time the job is lovely, it's hard work however it's sort of different every day if you know what I mean.

Cons

It depends on the store, if you get experienced co-workers that makes your job so much easier and you can easily run the store without any worries .
