Pros

Amazon has high hiring standards. I worked with people I respected and admired. Amazon people said what was on their mind. A great example was the quarterly all hands meeting. For an hour or more at the end of the meeting, senior managers would take questions from any employee on any subject: from the company's business strategy to its work environment to its food.

Cons

High turnover. Inexperienced management. Not a lot of communication from managers. Get used to hearing about major re-orgs over e-mail.

Pros

Amazon attracts very bright engineers who are motivated to solve large and complex problems. The culture encourages creative and diverse solutions and promotes knowledge sharing through brown bags and tech talks. Amazon has created a robust technical community within the company.

Cons

Amazon can be a very dynamic environment that some might consider chaotic which is a tough environment for technical program managers. TPMs often work with 6-10 other teams, all of which claim to have limited resources. Also, since Amazon hires very smart individuals, it seems that in meetings, everyone thinks he/she is the smart person in the room. This can lead to contentious debates and more chaos.

Pros

I work for Amazon Web Services, which is definitely the hot spot in the company. Great game-changing technology that is shaking up the industry. Absolutely no complaints about what we are doing.

Cons

Amazon has a culture of secrecy, both inside--and especially outside-- the company. They are so obsessive about this that it costs them trust. And trust is money. But worse, Amazon describes itself as frugal. Translated into your experience as an employee, that means cheap. So they do things like delay expense checks, apparently in order to maximize float, and cut corners on salaries and benefits compared to tech industry norms.
