Pros

You'll be paid much better than any summer research position at a university or similar.

Cons

Mentorship Variability: The mentorship experience is highly inconsistent. Some mentors go above and beyond, often taking over your tasks to fast-track their promotions. Others show minimal engagement, leaving you unsupported. Unfortunately, the mentor’s evaluation is the single most critical factor determining whether you receive a return offer, making this disparity incredibly stressful. Performance Review System: Completing all your goals, stretch goals, and even demonstrating a positive attitude doesn’t guarantee a return offer. The mentor's subjective review carries disproportionate weight, and positive midpoint evaluations can sometimes feel like a motivational tactic rather than an accurate indicator of success. Unrealistic Expectations: Managers may be unprepared or unavailable, yet hold you accountable for missed progress on last-minute projects. This creates an unfair dynamic, where you're blamed for circumstances beyond your control. Cultural and Communication Barriers: Co-workers and reviewers may lack training in cross-cultural communication, leading to misunderstandings and behavior that feels unprofessional or rude. Unfortunately, this can negatively impact your reviews, leaving you with little recourse. Unfair Hiring Decisions: Even exceptional performance—completing all projects, delivering high-quality presentations, and demonstrating leadership—can result in a non-hire decision if you encounter an unhelpful mentor, onboarding buddy, or manager. The system doesn’t seem to reward effort and achievement consistently, which can be deeply demotivating.
