More Cons than Pros

Pros

They pay you well and you are expected to work extremely long hours.

Cons

Zero work-life balance. Everyone hangs out with each other at work which is very odd... no life beyond work. It is a pretty toxic environment where everyone gossips. I feel people stay because of the remuneration package and international mobility opportunities. The actual business is going down... cigarettes will phase out, and the new cat strategies are a complete flop. Sadly, many of these international expats stay with BAT because they know they won't get paid more elsewhere or have the same opportunity. CEO and Leadership Team are all very hierarchical. People operate under fear... the ones who are chosen are very good at managing up. Not real leaders or innovators.

Pros

You learn a lot about the dark side of marketing/ sunset marketing and the truth behind the tobacco industry and it's numbers. If you can talk and look pretty, this is for you. They pay more than average even for fresh grads simply to keep up this elitist and exclusive vibe. Hear them speak and the image crumbles. More flair than content cause there are too many employees who are still living in the golden days and refuse to change their ways of working. These legacy people stay for so long that eventually it gets so hard to be promoted that some people who left are already earning 3x in a short amount of time.

Cons

- no proper onboarding/ guidance. Existing people constantly feel threatened by new people. Nothing is ever taught genuinely for the sake of smoother execution. It's all about individualism here. - the louder you are the better. The more you go out drinking with the bosses the better. Your actual work? Barely matters as long as you can come up with some excuse and if your expat managers love you, you're good to go. Management doesn't really know the on the ground issues. - experienced blatant racism cases. Example, Key Accounts department were speaking very lowly about a certain demographic in a rather loud "discussion" for the public to hear. Sadly, this particular demographic is your main customer. Imagine if they found out about the racist remarks. - expats playing ground. Locals treated like second priority. Local sensitivities are never considered.

Politics over merit

Pros

It is a case study of 'what not to do' hence there is a lot to learn. You learn that talk and socializing is of prime importance and ability is secondary. There is a lot to learn about favoritism and politics. You learn how to play the game. Teams (Trade, Field) can act as they want to deliver results. Things have changed from 5 years ago with a high turnover rate seeing university graduates filling positions and if you are ear-marked to succeed by management through schmoozing, you will go up the chain.

Cons

1. Politics - understand that all orgs have it but BAT AU is an extreme case 2. HR - powerful lobby that can make or break your career 3. The use of "well, that's how it is done in BAT" to answer anything that may be unjust 4. Aggressive and go-getter behaviour is encouraged at the detriment of individuality. You need to fit a mold 5. Old school management style that appeases the top bosses at the detriment of business 6. Rude behavior - again, accepted at BAT since it is good to drive people to succeed 7. No one wants to speak about products that are launched that don't succeed
