Pros

Bain is a great place to work. I feel very fortunate to have landed my non-consulting job here. Plenty of personal time off, the training has been great and my colleagues are fantastic. It's so nice to work at a place where I never have to say, "that person is an idiot," because pretty much everyone at Bain is intelligent and thoughtful. My supervisors have been extremely supportive, I've been able to work in a way at Bain that I haven't been able to at any other company. Bain has an entrepreneur spirit in that you can "build your own Bain." At Bain we do the things we want to do and are passionate about, not just the things that just pay the bills. I've worked at many other companies that people consider glamorous and are great for the resume. The management at Bain is fantastic, I promise you, it will be hard to find a better company to work for.

Cons

If you're non-consulting staff there is a divide and you will feel it. Consultants are the bread and butter of the company (it is a consulting firm, after all!) and you will be reminded of this occasionally. There is ALWAYS a ton of work to do which is great for opportunity but can kill your live/work balance if you let it. It's up to you.

Thanks for taking the time to share how you pursued your passions while working in our New York office. We are always interested in hearing what we can do more of to bring our consulting and non-consulting teams together. Office events and social impact activities – open to all employees – are great options and I encourage you to share additional ideas with your office leadership team.

Pros

My comments are specifically for Bain & Company India. Partner Group is good, very intelligent people and bring a lot of combined International and India experience. The type and quality of work/cases handled is great

Cons

Being a new entrant in the India market (BCG & MCK have been here for years), it is trying very hard to build a brand/strong base. However the growth is coming at the expense of the employees. Long long long frustrating hours working without any direction or definition from upper management. Employees from the other global offices coming to do thier rotation programs also find the work culture incredibly different than offices abroad. The India offices come last on the employee global survey continously for the last 2 years in all benchmarks. They Manager group especially is very clueless. Trying to over deliver to impress clients and partner group, the work done is probably 3x times expected by the client. Weekend work is a norm and one is expected to work around 80 hours a week. Rather be a banker and get paid twice for the same amout of hours.

Pros

Face it, people work at Bain for the cachet. People that you need to impress are impressed when you say you work for Bain & Co. It allows for lucrative exit opportunities in the corporate world, great b-school opportunities, and facilitates an easy transition to private equity. Working with smart, motivated, and talented people who truly want to make a difference. I love that everyone is competent and delivers what they promise. There are very few people I don't get along with, and no one whose abilities I do not respect. The people get along really well, and it's a fun crowd to hang out with after work. Communication is pithy and direct within the firm, and people are very goal-oriented. I believe my communication is much more lucid, and my thinking process much more logical than when I entered the firm.

Cons

Unlike finance jobs in HK, Bain does not pay a housing allowance. The corporate culture in the Greater China offices means that work-life balance is not respected at all. The US offices would have a 7 or 8pm end on a typical work day, whereas midnight is very very common in the China offices. Lastly, because of how many people apply and the vast turnover, Bain Greater China simply doesn't appear to value its people as much as the other offices. Within that is the terrible ACN (Associate Consultant - New) position that doesn't exist anywhere else, which is essentially a probationary period for new hires in the Shanghai and Beijing offices before they make the entry level Associate Consultant position.
