Pros

Work is very rigorous and generally environment is supportive. My department (TE) has a very good work-life balance and excellent management hierarchy. Opportunity to work multi-lingual environment. Engineering challenges are broad and interesting - you will have to learn something outside of your speciality to deal with your working on. Young and ever changing population. Close to outdoors and locals are welcoming (but yes do speak French, you are in France). Training often good and varied. Upper management often good at resolving personnel problems but don't communicate structure/procedures well (it should be in the introductory session!) Many opportunities to volunteer/do work outside of you immediate sector. Pay very good.

Cons

Very conservative work environment, due age structure (many students, many 50yo+ permanent staff) new technologies/methodologies often only implemented slowly. Low staff numbers for quantity work often means there's no redundancy (if the specialist is ill/goes on holiday, work may just stop for the duration). Seemingly little autonomy given to managers in some ways - why does a request for training need to go two-three (or sometimes more) steps up the hierarchy for approval for example? Slows down some things needlessly.

Thank you for your review and the time you took to post it. We appreciate your suggestions and constructive criticism. One of the key pillars of CERN’s mission is education and the Organization prides itself in providing on-the-job training to young scientists and professionals. To achieve this, students are given the opportunity to work closely with our experienced staff members thus shaping a widespread age canvas which is a cornerstone of our diversity. Regarding your comment on managers’ autonomy; administrative processes such as training requests are constantly reviewed in order to facilitate employees’ lives and minimize bureaucracy and it can be reasonably argued that the signature level of an automated document in established signature chains is not a reflection of the degree of a manager’s autonomy. It is also about ensuring a balance across teams, monitoring the training courses given to achieve an equitable approach for all. Thank you once more for your review and all the best!
