Probably the worst place I've ever worked

Pros

Cons

Where do I begin? A lot of reviews around "toxic positivity" are spot on, but I'll take it one further. This place gave me cult vibes. Nepotism runs rampant, and the only way you'll progress in your career is if you find yourself in the Executive Team's Inner Circle. Canva has a habit of hiring really smart people and then absolutely crushing their ability to help the company grow. Once you're on board, you're expected to do exactly what is asked of you- there is zero autonomy, everybody is fake nice, and you will drown in boring, cliche HR buzzwords. The most senior leaders of the company are inexperienced and only got there because they were either an early employee or directly worked for the Executive Team. They are crippled with impostor syndrome but still lead with an unearned sense of entitlement. If you want to work somewhere that preaches "we're a family!" you should work here. Especially if you love toxic families. But if you want to work somewhere that will treat you like an adult and give you room to be creative and drive impact, look elsewhere. This is especially true for non-ANZ based employees.

Pros

It's one of the best apps out there, no question. The CEO is a visionary, a great character, and an undeniably inspiring leader and individual. Great perks including meals and snacks served daily, education allowance, office parties, free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, budget for the team to spend time together outside work, equity options, etc.

Cons

While change is inevitable especially with a company that is at hypergrowth, employee morale is just at an all-time low. I used to enjoy going to work because there are bright people to learn from and the energy was fun. Now, we are scared that we'll just be another company whose funds will get mismanaged, Glassdoor reviewers are hunted down, suck-ups are throwing themselves at the new management, talented people are either leaving or getting overlooked, incompetent leaders are still in position and age-old problems aren't being acted on. It's a Friday night and I used to stay for after-work socials. Now, I prefer to leave for home immediately and write a review because delivering feedback to HR would be taken as an attack.

Pros

Gym, excellent free food, inspiring product and mission Really big feature roadmap w lots of opportunities. Serious dedication to values Dedicated developer efficiency team. Code health culture from Day 1, and it shows! But don't forget the free coaching and beer on tap

Cons

Canva. it's nostalgic for when it was still small. Constantly talking about the good old days when it was twenty people round a table, and look how far "we've" come... Mate you're not a little minnow any more. You HAVE your product market fit. Your competition takes you seriously. Do you? Feels like canva is allergic to changing it's old structure, processes, or anything that would Feel Less Fun. No some days it's like it's run by cliques and whisper networks, it's processes are weekly pivots and decisions made on gut feel, and morale is sinking left and right. Maybe that worked a year ago. But right now there's way less management than you'd expect at HALF our size, barely any companywide coordination, a deficit of designers and PMs and other specialists, and the C-suite micromanages like they've never figured out how to give away a block of Lego in their life. Trust issues??? And the obsession with harmony and looking good and positivity is ridiculous. I found out they didn't have room for everyone at the xmas party on the week of, but rumour has it they were sitting on that embarassing nugget for almost a month. On the other hand the culture of secrecy makes friday drinks EXCELLENT if you know where to stand so there's that
