Pros

Capital One is a fantastic place to work due to the environment. Managers are really flexible with where and how you work through the future of work program. People are encouraged to apply for different positions every few years to build their respective skill set. The company has a significant amount of very smart people. Managers are encouraged to have 10:10's meetings atleast monthly to discuss your performance. Benefits and the work-life balance are well above average.

Cons

Many of Capital One's pros also result in the cons. The hiring process is geared toward hiring highly ambitious and intelligent people. This results in a very competitive environment where people are backstabbing and stepping on others to get ahead. The highly PC environment results in a lack of honesty/integrity and a reluctance to hold people accountable. People have a high degree of academic and business intelligence, but emotional intellligence / social skills are lacking. The performance evaluation process is highly suspect as it force ranks people in the same departments at the same level. Some groups have a high level of performance and great employees while others are worthless. Many people do not provide any value add to the company. TOO MANY CHIEFS...

Pros

COF is populated with very smart people who are driven to create leading edge results. Total cash compensation is excellent, although base is a bit lower than average. Leadership is very understanding of employees who need time off for family reasons or other personal reasons. Benefits are fairly good with a broad range of educational assistance, adoption benefits and even a two-week paid paternity leave. There is a high acceptance of people of color and LGBT staff. People are thoroughly screened before hiring to ensure as much as possible that they will be successful in this fast-paced, demanding culture. Women occupy many key leadership positions. The Richmond West Creek campus is beautiful.

Cons

Culture is quite unforgiving...very PC. Long hours and stress to create quickly with no mistakes can take their toll--this is not a company for those lacking confidence. In the current climate for financials, middle and upper middle managers are interested in showing their worth by cutting headcount while driving remaining staff to do more with less. As a whole the company is obsessed with speed and a six-sigma type approach to creation. Insofar as performance measurement goes, many times a person's "behaviors" as listed in in process counts far more than their results. In the past five years, the company has become far less nurturing.
