Pros

I have worked with DHL for the past several years and took up this opportunity to join DHL in their new facility as they undertake something incredibly brave with CAE. Compared to working at a large field station for a number of years, this facility has allowed me to get the recognition I deserved for my abilities that were often swept under the carpet (and directly trampled upon) due to my young age and issues related to upper management and nepotism. Right now the station is new enough where these kinds of problems are not prevalent. I have really been enjoying my time here in the past few months as things have evened out with new procedures. Other pros are no union nonsense to contend with, we have a District Manager that is extremely affable and approachable and takes time to listen to people, and the company is improving on it's communication issues which is huge overall problem for the company. At first their approach to problems was all wrong here at CAE but with corporate assistance (believe it or not!) and outside consultants productivity and morale has been raised substantially in the past few months.

Cons

I will say, however, that while I am enjoying my time in the sun I see others that are getting played with in the traditional DHL way. One manager holds mystery grudges against some people for unexplained reasons threatening termination with no explanation or write up, unwillingness to work with people on sick time/doctors appointments (even with pregnant women!!) and a fastidiousness to the "rules" as they see it that causes consternation amongst subordinates. I will also say that it is very hard to get a raise within DHL even on a yearly/quarterly basis. I was unfortunate enough to get a better position during a "hiring and increase freeze" where I was advised (again at the large field office) I would not receive the raise for the position; this was more than 2 years ago and I still have not seen this raise! DHL was very savvy to choose SC with it's lack of worker protection laws here in South Carolina. Scheduling time-off is complicated and often left to the last minute. I could really really go on about the inner politics but I am certain these kind of things exist in all big companies. Other "satellite" issues related to other departments also exist to impact the brokerage side of the business; to name one lack of responsibility on some parties and in particular disinterest with sales reps who do not get involved to fully understand obstacles in operations caused by their promises and do not take initiative to do damage control when things get rough.
