Pros

great customers, great employees. There really isn't much good anyone can say about working for dollar general.Their is not many pros one can come up with easily.

Cons

Here the company goes again.Company is still ttop heavy, payroll budjets are way to thin. Another corporate visit couple of weeks ago. Unlimited hours for that store, completely unrealistic store being viewed from corporate, How is upper management going to help us solve these problems, if they keep seeing these stores. They need to walk in unannounced to some stores to see how things really are, not a staged store where everything has been made perfect for their visit. How are they suppose to help when they think things are like that in every store. I really hope that someone is using this site to learn more about their company. Lets nominate some one from corporate to be on "Undercover Boss"., maybe somethings would change for the better.

Pros

its all about who is YOUR leader...i started here in 08 as a cashier minimum wage, one week later I was promoted to ASM given a raise during the 11 months I worked MY BUTT off, i went around cleaned up stores on the SMART team (i was captain no extra pay) cleaned up for corporate visits (Kathleen for ex...) went on the shelving team also raised gondolas installed clipstrips etc i was given $1.00 more a hour for this...i worked many many many hours off the clock for my SM (totally against policy) yes STUPID of me....It all paid off I was promoted to SM in OCT 09...WOW!!! the store i walked into...lets just say YOU COULDNT WALK THRU THE FRONT DOOR! That bad, I cleaned my store, up increased sales, ran good numbers, made my bonuses every month, became a store manager trainer (no extra $) 9 months running the store at model store standards, my DM was strict he done the "white glove" test on my shelves, sunglass rack, ice cream cooler etc...he wasnt playing around....Time to move up...I was transfered to a bigger town...bigger store....got a raise...sounded nice...LOL until I get there and find out my ASM is making over 15 an hour totally not worth it...she did nothing 7 write ups on her and still couldnt get rid of her....i was told to do what I had to just get my store clean and do it quick...I had no one to help me it was me, myself, and I...impossible w/ over 500 customers coming thru my doors daily...I broke policy knowing Id lose my job but hoping I wouldnt get caught...I would of lost my job either way once my RM came in...so i took the chance.......i have now been promoted to customer.....

Cons

no hours to schedule the help you need, no one would stay, asm made to much

Pros

The best reason to work at dollar general is that a job is better than no job.

Cons

Dollar general expects you to do the work of 19 people by yourself without appropriate compensation. They do not allow enough hours on the payroll to have proper staffing. The air conditioners are set at a temperature in the summer time that literally melts the chocolate and candles.
