Gaithersburg Site: Too much politics, too little science - Senior Scientist AstraZeneca Employee Review

Pros

The Gaithersburg site is the previous MedImmune, it hosts 2-3 thousand employees here in a beautiful campus.

Cons

The Analytical Sciences department has been declining to such a mess where teams/groups are divided and throw dust to each other: *Senior managements (LT) here have been making decisions based on politics, not science. The extent of bureaucracy is higher than ever. *DO NOT expect your voices can be heard, despite they claim or even encourage you to speak up. Because when you do, you are doomed - there are several vengeful managers out here and they will do anything to "stabilize their sovereignty". *There are so many employees in this department yet there are so few who actually stay in labs and do the work - everyone seeks to be some kind of "leader" here which drives others to work for him/her. *SME is a joke, it shouldn't exist. *Talents turnaround is getting faster than ever.

Pros

I imagine this is very dependent on line management but I find my team and supervisors to be true champions of a high performing and highly compassionate work culture. I find my work challenging and rewarding, and have had opportunities to learn and grow and be rewarded and recognized for my output. No job is perfect but I’m truly happy to work here and at a time when AZ is truly rising like a rocket.

Cons

Like any massive global corporate entity, things can sometimes move slowly and it can be challenging to navigate a high number of constantly evolving priorities and initiatives. That being said, AZ is very clear about its north stars and values which makes it possible to prioritize work that has the most impact and alignment with the company’s ambition and business prerogatives. 60% office attendance policy is also a bit funny when oftentimes I am on Teams calls with colleagues sitting in other areas of the world.
