Pros

Mission and Impact: The company’s purpose, particularly in oncology, is a genuine driver of internal motivation. There is a deep sense of meaning behind the work, especially in late-stage commercialization and alliance execution. Cross-Functional Collaboration: There was generally strong partnership across teams. Many colleagues were mission-aligned and open to process improvement. Leadership Trust and Autonomy: Certain leaders empowered team members with autonomy, especially at the director level. In some areas, there was genuine trust in the expertise of individual contributors. Strong Peer Network: The culture fostered deep camaraderie among peers. The informal support system and shared accountability helped drive results even in high-pressure situations.

Cons

Frequent Restructuring: Ongoing reorganizations created instability and made long-term planning difficult. Talented individuals were sometimes displaced due to location-based decisions rather than performance. Governance Overload: Decision-making could be slow because of bureaucratic layers, even when projects were strategically aligned. Navigating approvals often consumed more time than execution. Competing Priorities: Teams were expected to drive transformation while also executing day-to-day deliverables. This resulted in burnout for some and a lack of clarity on shifting priorities. Inconsistent Leadership Quality: While there were exceptional leaders, others lacked the clarity, coaching skills, or strategic perspective needed at scale. Some departments suffered from reactive decision-making or unclear delegation. Culture of Overcommitment: The expectation to operate at a high level without proportional increases in support or resources was a common concern. This sometimes led to high attrition in key support functions. Limited Upward Mobility Without Relocation: Career advancement options for seasoned professionals were often tied to relocation or shifts into roles with less visibility or alignment to prior success.

Pros

I imagine this is very dependent on line management but I find my team and supervisors to be true champions of a high performing and highly compassionate work culture. I find my work challenging and rewarding, and have had opportunities to learn and grow and be rewarded and recognized for my output. No job is perfect but I’m truly happy to work here and at a time when AZ is truly rising like a rocket.

Cons

Like any massive global corporate entity, things can sometimes move slowly and it can be challenging to navigate a high number of constantly evolving priorities and initiatives. That being said, AZ is very clear about its north stars and values which makes it possible to prioritize work that has the most impact and alignment with the company’s ambition and business prerogatives. 60% office attendance policy is also a bit funny when oftentimes I am on Teams calls with colleagues sitting in other areas of the world.
